'The Affair' Season 2 Release Date, Plot Rumors: 2 New 'Perspectives' Will Be Added

Showtime Network's drama series "The Affair" is set to premiere its second season on Oct. 4. During the recently concluded press tour of the Television Critics' Association, Showtime unveiled the show's newest trailer.

"The Affair" takes on a more "complex" turn at storytelling, as it did during its first season, where the events in the story was told from two distinct perspectives of the main characters in the series. The series follows the extramarital affair between Noah Solloway, a schoolteacher and writer and Alison Bailey, a young waitress, set in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island.

The trailer itself showed that two more perspectives will be added to the way the story is depicted in the next season. This was also confirmed by series creator Sarah Treem.

"[Each episode] is still going to be two perspectives. The question is: Whose two perspectives?" she said.

While the show's first season garnered praise from critics about its refreshing take on storytelling, other reports are criticizing how Noah's and Alison's memories of how an event happened are so different from each other.

"I know it's frustrating. As our characters became put in situations with more and more stress, their recollections started to diverge. That was the principle we were operating under," the show runner said. "We're not doing it to make sure that everybody understands it perfectly. The POVs are integral to the show … Neither side is right, neither side is wrong, but in the conversation between the two lies the truth."

The two other perspectives that will be added to the show are those of the main character's former spouses, Helen Solloway and Cole Lockhart.

Season 2, as the trailer showed, will delve more into the murder-mystery that Noah is supposedly involved in. At the end of Season 1, he was arrested for a hit-and-run. This development does not bode well for his relationship with Alison. Both of them have started a new life together after they left their respective spouses. Although it is not yet known how their former spouses' perspectives will play into Season 2, one report in Collider speculates that this will be done with a lot of flashbacks and "time-jumping."
