'The Americans' Season 5 Spoilers: Showrunners Tease 'Most Complicated Story'

"The Americans" recently had its season 5 premiere, and by the end of it, fans were left with more questions than answers. According to showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, this is only the beginning of a very complicated story.

It can be recalled that the premiere episode of the fifth season, titled "Amber Waves," saw Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) infiltrating a U.S. military facility in order to get a skin sample of William's (Dylan Baker) corpse. However, one of their KGB informants, Hans, fell on top of William's infected body, leading Elizabeth to shoot him dead right then and there.

Other than that, Philip and Elizabeth also impersonated airline personnel in order to sneak their way into a family of Soviet immigrants--with the help of a new Vietnamese teen spy, no less.

While speaking to TVLine, Weisberg and Fields previewed what the rest of the season has in store for viewers, including Philip and Elizabeth's intentions with the family of Soviets.

"This is probably the most complicated [story]," Weisberg teased.

"But in a lot of ways, it might be our most real spy story to date," Fields added. "Their goal is to get close to the family and figure it out from there. The KGB is sufficiently concerned about what's going on with the U.S., in terms of what they may be doing to Soviet agriculture, to want to know what this guy is doing here."

As for their daughter, Paige (Holly Taylor), she has been through a lot and Elizabeth is trying to help her cope with everything by training her in the art of self-defense. However, the effect it is having on her may be far greater than Philip and Elizabeth thought. Fields said as much when he spoke to Variety about the premiere episode.

"Paige is in her own deep denial of how hard this stuff is hitting her," he said.

Speaking of children, the season 5 premiere also revealed that Mischa, Philip's long-lost son, is currently traveling to the United States to reunite with his father. But that story may take a while to come to fruition, as Weisberg previewed. However, that does not mean that it will not be a good story. After all, leaving the Soviet Union will not come easy.

"The Americans" season 5 airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on FX.
