'The Angry Birds Movie', 'Despicable Me' Producers to Make 'Garfield' Movie
After years of his absence, everyone's favorite cat is expected to return to the big screens.
It has been years since Garfield's appearance in movies, with Bill Murray as the voice of the lovable cat. The previous films were live-action movies titled "Garfield: The Movie" and "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties." Alcon Entertainment is expected to bring back Garfield in another animated film.
The chubby exotic shorthair will be seen once again, according to the co-CEOs of Alcon Entertainment Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. In the statement as per The Wrap, they said, "Jim Davis's creation has been an international sensation for all ages for decades, and we are thrilled to bring an animated Garfield feature to the big screen."
It was announced that the production company recently acquired the exclusive rights to the popular comic strip. With that, they hope to revive Jim Davis' iconic work and develop it into a franchise of CG animated Garfield films.
The upcoming film will be producer by John Cohen from "Despicable Me" and Steven P. Wegner from "The Angry Birds Movie," along with Davis himself. The author of the comics expressed his excitement with the upcomng project, saying to Entertainment Weekly, "I've been so impressed with the quality of animation and storytelling coming out of Hollywood of late. I can't wait to get into production with the terrific team Alcon has assembled."
Davis' work began as comic strips on newspapers, slowly making its name as the most popular comic strip. It has been published in more than 2000 newspaper networks and journal, reaching readership at more than 260 million.
However, there has yet to be any details regarding what the plot of the film will be. In addition, no announcement was made regarding who will be taking on the popular roles. Alcon Entertainment also has not specify a date for its release.
