'The Blacklist' Getting a Spinoff Starring 'X-Men' Alum Famke Janssen
American crime drama television "The Blacklist" is set to get bigger as it has been reported that the show will get a spinoff. According to The Hollywood Reporter, network NBC and Sony Pictures Television are partnering with the producers of the show to make the offshoot a reality. There is no official confirmation yet but as soon as the spinoff gets greenlit, it will be starred by "X-Men" alum Famke Janssen who will make a debut on the main show in season 3 episode 21 on May 5.
Janssen is set to play the role as Susan "Scottie" Halsted who is speculated to be Tom's (Ryan Eggold) mother. The details about her character is still kept under wraps though but it's expected to be packed with mystery and shocking revelation especially with regards to her relation to the characters of the show. She will also appear in the last episode before the season finale which will air on May 12. And as reported, it will be the episode that will serve as the backdoor pilot for the spinoff and it will be directed by Michael Dinner ("Justified," "Masters of Sex").
Deadline also noted that aside from Janssen, Edi Gathegi has signed on to join the spinoff to reprise his role as Matias Solomon, a Cabal operative tasked to apprehend Reddington or Red (James Spader). It's also rumored that Eggold will be part of the show and will have a relationship with Janssen's character that is similar to the relationship that Liz (Megan Boone) has with Red. The spinoff is created by creator/executive producer Jon Bokenkamp and exec producer/showrunner John Eisendrath.
According to Variety, the plotted spinoff has been in talks since late last year. NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke said that it is true that there are discussions happening for a whole new series but she has remained quiet on other details.
"The only thing I can say is we are talking about planting some characters in the show, much in the way that we do in the world of the 'Chicago' shows. They could be explored as a potential spin-off, but we have in no way committed to a spin-off series," she said.
