'The Blair Witch Project' TV Series in Development? Original Director Shares Ideas, Clarifies Lionsgate Plans
Could "The Blair Witch Project" come back as a TV show? The suspense thriller made waves in 1999 for its fresh concept but will its ideas work for television?
The film's original director and creator Eduardo Sanchez recently talked about "The Blair Witch" project in a Diminishing Returns podcast. He revealed that he once discussed doing a TV show with co-writer and co-director Daniel Myrick.
"The idea of a 'Blair Witch' anthology has always been a really interesting thing," he said. "I think it's kinda one of those things that might be, the more you think about it, kinda the perfect TV show."
Sanchez, however clarified in the same podcast that he and Myrick no longer own the rights to the property since Lionsgate bought it so, they won't have any say about future "Blair Witch" productions. Despite this, the director believes television will be its next platform.
"I think the next big thing for 'Blair Witch' will probably be TV," he said.
Myrick also clarified that Lionsgate hasn't called them up for a new project. He's not aware of a potential TV show iteration in development.
"The Blair Witch Project" follows three film students doing a documentary on the legend of a supernatural being in a small Maryland town. This witch has been linked to the disappearances of some locals.
The first movie clicked in the box office because viewers thought that the camera footages from the documentary film within the actual movie were authentic. Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams were also unknown stars, hence viewers thought everything that unfolded in the story actually happened in real-life.
"The Blair Witch Project" had a $60,000 production budget but it went on to earn $250 million in the box office. The film had a 2000 sequel, "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2," and a 2016 sequel "Blair Witch" that came from different productions. Both movies, however, performed poorly at the tilts.
