The Chainsmokers, Coldplay Debut Live Performance of New Collaboration Song 'Something Just Like This'
After dropping a new collaboration song out of nowhere, The Chainsmokers and Coldplay took the stage on Feb. 22 for the first live performance of "Something Just Like This" at the Brit Awards 2017.
The Chainsmokers have previously teased that they were working on a new song with Coldplay - or, at least, the band's frontman, Chris Martin. This much was revealed when the electronic dance music duo shared two short clips of song snippets featuring the Coldplay singer.
Then, hours before they took the stage, The Chainsmokers and Coldplay released their new song collaboration, "Something Just Like This." The song stays true to the DJs' style while also incorporating Coldplay's more recent sound. Martin lends his vocals to the entirety of the song.
Their live debut of the song at the Brits 2017 came as a surprise, though. Their performance started out with The Chainsmokers onstage while a sideways silhouette of Martin sings. The curtain soon drops, revealing an energetic singer jumping and dancing to the tune. The Coldplay frontman even dives into the crowd mid-song. The rest of the band's members, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion, also joined them onstage.
Prior to their performance, Martin paid tribute to legendary singer George Michael by singing his song, "A Different Corner." At one point, Michael joined Martin for a duet of sorts when a live performance of him singing was projected onto the screen. Andrew Ridgeley, Michael's friend and former Wham! co-member, held back tears as he delivered a speech about the "Faith" singer. "On Christmas Day 2016, the greatest singer-songwriter of his generation, an icon of his era, and my beloved friend, George Michael was lost," Ridgeley said. "A supernova in a firmament of shining stars had been extinguished and it felt like the sky had fallen in."
More recently, Coldplay shared backstage photos of them with The Chainsmokers just before they went onstage.
