'The Circus' Season 2 Plot Details: Showtime Reveals New Season Tackles President Trump's First 100 Days
Showtime's documentary series, "The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth," had been renewed for a second season to specifically portray U.S. President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office.
According to the network's press release, the upcoming second season will look closely at the events that are unfolding "both inside and outside the Beltway" of Trump's first 3 months in the White House.
The first season of the show put the spotlight on the media circus that surrounded the 2016 presidential elections between Trump and Democrat candidate, Hillary Clinton.
Showtime CEO David Nevins said in a statement that the show is a breakthrough for documentary TV and that it was a "compulsively watchable series, providing unparalleled access and critical insight."
The hosts of the show, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, plus Mark McKinnon, are scheduled to return for the second season. According to Deadline, Halperin and Heilemann were co-managing editors of Bloomberg Politics, with the former already covering eight presidential campaigns throughout his career.
McKinnon, on the other hand, will not serve as a host anymore but will return to work for the show as a producer. He is a political adviser and television producer with an extensive political experience - including working for former President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain.
The first season of the show garnered mostly positive reviews because it showed how exhausting life could be on the campaign trail. It also gave viewers a glimpse of the candidates' more human side. The series went on for 26 episodes, with a running time of 30 minutes each.
The first episode was aired on Jan. 17, 2016 and followed then possible presidential candidates - Ted Cruz, and Bernie Sanders, alongside Trump. The first season run then ended on Nov. 13 with an episode titled "President Trump." It was a special hour-long finale detailing the elections and the aftermath.
"The Circus" returns for a second season on March 19, 8 p.m. ET on Showtime Network.
