'The Croods' Presents the World's First 'Modern' Family: Review (VIDEO)
"The Croods" is the latest family-friendly, action-filled film from DreamWorks Animation. The movie features an all-star cast providing the voices for its cavemen-like characters, who must adapt to life in a new, modern world.
Like any family, the Croods have their issues: daughter Eep, voiced by Emma Stone, wants to leave the family cave and explore the larger world. Her father Grug, voiced by Nicolas Cage, wants to keep the family together and safe within the confines of a dark, dank cave. When nature forces the whole family to leave the only home they've ever known, the Croods must learn about the modern world and the dangers and joys within.
Ryan Reynolds voices the teen hero, Guy, who helps guide the Croods on their journey to a new, safe home. He provides street smarts that Grug never learned and is too afraid to practice, thus making Grug jealous of all the attention and praise lavished on Guy. The family, through a dizzying array of twists and turns, finally makes it to safety and becomes the modern family they need to be in the new world.
DreamWorks provides an astonishing use of color and animation throughout the film; one feels as if one is actually traveling with the Crood family. The film provides humor anyone can enjoy, making it family-friendly and safe for children of all ages.
What's remarkable about the film is the way that Cage, Stone, and Reynolds managed to capture their characters' personalities without even seeing them beforehand. At a press conference, the three admitted that they had never even met until moments before the conference started. Yet somehow they managed to play off of one another with their voice work.
When asked if there would be a sequel to "The Croods," DreamWorks' directors, Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, said they could certainly continue the story depending on the popularity of this film.
"I'd like a shirt, then," Reynolds joked, adding that he would be up for a sequel should DreamWorks decide to continue on.
"The Croods," rated PG, is in theaters today.
