'The Dark Tower' TV Series Still in Development for a Complete Reboot, Says Stephen King

Development of "The Dark Tower" TV series will still continue despite the movie failing to shatter box office records. Stephen King, who created this fantasy world, stated that the franchise might undergo a complete reboot for the small screen.

Speaking with Vulture, King confirmed that "The Dark Tower" remains in development for television. It would be better to start the story over as a series than to continue the story from the movies since the book version that King authored spans 3,000 pages.

King also revealed there were challenges to develop "The Dark Tower" for the big screen because of the extensive material from the books. Nevertheless, he thought the movie that Akiva Goldsman wrote with Jeff Pinkner turned out well even if it failed at the box office.

Film director Nikolaj Arcel is also part of the TV series development. He helped write the pilot episode and plot the ideas for the series.

"We're going back in the past," he told Indiewire before the movie came out in theaters. "It's very, very closely adhering to the 'Wizard and Glass' novel and parts of 'The Gunslinger' novel."

It's still unclear, however, if Idris Elba, who starred in the movie as the gunslinger Roland, will become part of the series. The actor told Mashable in a video interview that he's not aware of what's happening in the TV development.

"As you know, the film was sort of mixed reviews; some loved it, and I think some hated it, so who knows," Elba said.

King published eight books in "The Dark Tower saga from 1982 to 2012. The stories are combinations of Western, dark fantasy and science fiction.

The movie development began over a decade ago and several directors were originally attached, such as J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard before Arcel became the final choice. King also wanted HBO to distribute the TV show but details to the small screen debut are still unconfirmed for now.
