'The Expanse' News: Series Gets Second Season Set To Air in 2017

"The Expanse," the mystery sci-fi drama TV series based on the James S.A. Corey series of novels has just been greenlit for a second season by its home network Syfy.

Its first episode, "Dulcinea," debuted online three weeks before its official premiere on Syfy on December 14, 2015. The online debut brought in 4.5 million viewers while the first three episodes that aired on Syfy raked in an average of 1.6 million viewers.

According to Variety, Syfy has increased the order for Season 2 to 13 episodes. The first season of "The Expanse," which is produced by the Alcon Television Group, consisted of 10 episodes.

The renewal of "The Expanse" and the additional episodes ordered indicate that Syfy is confident about the show's reception and future success. "'The Expanse' is firing on all cylinders creatively, building a passionate fan base among viewers and critics alike, and delivering on Syfy's promise of smart, provocative science fiction entertainment," Syfy and Chiller president Dave Howe said, adding, "We can't wait to see where the story takes us in season two."

"The Expanse" follows the story of Josephus Miller (Thomas Jane), a tough police detective, and James Holden (Steven Strait), a rogue first officer of an ice freighter, as they form an unlikely alliance and uncover, along with Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), a UN officer, a major conspiracy that threatens the future of humanity. The series also stars Florence Faivre (Julie Mao), Cas Anvar (Alex Kamal), Dominique Tipper (Naomi Nagata), Wes Chatham (Amos Burton), Paulo Costanzo (Shed Garvey), and Shawn Doyle (Sadavir Errinwright).

Set 200 years from the present, "The Expanse" is based on a series of novels written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who published the novels under the nom de plume James S.A. Corey.

Last month, Howe told Variety that "The Expanse" is Syfy's most expensive series to date, saying, "[Once they see it,] people will realize that not many networks are investing as much as we are in this quality content."

"This is not just big," he said. "This is premium network scale."

The second season of "The Expanse" is set to air in early 2017.
