'The Family' Season 1 News, Spoilers: Series Creator on Previous Episode's Surprise; Series to Be Cancelled?

ABC's new thriller "The Family" dropped a major bombshell at the end of Sunday's episode, titled "I Win."

In the show's biggest twist thus far, it was revealed that the Adam Warren (Liam James) that was returned to the family after 10 long years isn't the real Adam after all, but merely an impostor.

In an interview with TVLine, series creator Jenna Bans admitted that she had planned this all along and that the series won't backtrack on its big revelation.

As some viewers have noted, the DNA test results don't seem all that credible. The DNA samples were, after all, taken from a coffee mug and a dirty Q-tip. Nevertheless, Bans insists that Adam's DNA test results are accurate and that "Adam" is not who the Warrens think he is.

"It's definitely not a bait-and-switch where we're going to take it back," Bans told TVLine. "This is the definitive answer, and the mystery will spiral out from there. If anything, the show gets to be a faster ride after the reveal in this episode."

Bans also spoke about how Danny, the Warrens' older son, will react to discovering Adam's real identity. "He does find out, and that's a pretty amazing scene," Bans said. "It doesn't happen for a little while, because as we saw in Episode 4, he starts to wonder if he's maybe he's just insane and unreliable and a loser."

"…When he does, I would say the word to use is 'explosive,'" she added.

Meanwhile, there has been some speculation that "The Family" is in danger of getting axed by ABC. The series recently saw a ratings dip lower than that of "Blood & Oil," which will no longer be renewed by the network. Another low performer, "Of Kings and Prophets," was also recently cancelled. According to TV.com, given that the ratings of "The Family" have been almost similar to those of the two cancelled shows, it probably won't be long until ABC announces that the series won't be renewed for a second run.

"The Family" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
