'The Flash' Season 2 News, Spoilers: Candice Patton Shares on Character Iris and Barry's Future
This week's episode of The CW's superhero series "The Flash" acquainted viewers with the Earth-2 setting and showed them how the lives of the show's various characters have diverged from their Earth-1 counterparts in the new alternate world.
One of the more interesting Earth-2 versions was that of Iris West (Candice Patton), who is a journalist at the Central City Picture News and is Barry Allen/The Flash's (Grant Gustin) best friend. But while the Earth-1 West has been the apple of Barry's eye for years, in Earth-2, the two are married and Iris is a detective working for the Central City Police Department.
Patton recently talked to TVLine about her Earth-2 character, Detective West, and revealed that she thought the character was "awesome" and is what she had wanted for Iris all along. In the interview, the actress recalled how she reacted with disbelief when she received the first draft of the "Escape from Earth-2" script.
"I thought, this is awesome, this is everything that I have wanted for Iris." Patton said. "For me, it was one of the coolest episodes I've gotten to play with and shoot."
Asked whether she was more surprised that West's Earth-2 version, Iris West-Allen, was a tough-as-nails cop in charge of controlling metahumans or that she and Barry are married, the actress answered, "I think both were a bit shocking."
"I mean, Barry and I, our thing has always kind of been there, we're always alluding to the possibility of that — the newspaper says we're married in the future," she said.
As for what effect the events on Earth-2 will have on the relationship between Iris and Barry on Earth-1, Patton said, "This idea that they are married on Earth-Two and supposedly married in the future makes Iris start to wonder if maybe they are truly destined to be together."
The second season of "The Flash" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
