'The Good Dinosaur' Update: Movie 'Underperformed' for a Holiday Release

When Pixar announced "The Good Dinosaur," there was much hype among families and children who love the story-telling that Pixar is very well known for. However, it seems the market didn't buy the Thanksgiving movie as it was said to have "underperformed" compared to "Inside Out" and "Minions."

While "Inside Out" didn't hit its goal due to "Jurassic World" surprisingly taking the big screens by fire, it has still become the top-earning movie for Pixar this year. "The Good Dinosaur," on the other hand, has reportedly gone behind expectation as it only raked in an estimated $39 million during its Thanksgiving weekend debut.

Several analysts said earlier that they were looking toward opening figures of about $50 to $53 million from Friday to Sunday, but apparently, the film wasn't so much welcomed by the masses, thanks to "The Hunger Games."

Movie Fone explains that one of the reasons why it wasn't such a hit is because it was "too family-oriented," which is totally not so like Pixar as the company is known to steal the hearts of kids and adults alike. However, Disney reportedly announced about 17 percent of the people who watched the movie were adults.

Another possible reason is because of the decision to pick voice actors who don't really ring a loud bell to moviegoers. Unfortunately, the market wants names, big names, before they start popping on popcorn over a new movie. With the Peter Sohn film, the names didn't seem too "star-studded" for fans to see.

On the other hand, Cartoon Brew says "Good Dino" still passes for a good Pixar release since it has become the third overall for animation films released this year, with a five-day total of $55.6 million.

The outlet also says the figures are actually good enough for the investors who put their money in it, not to mention it is still a success compared to the $33.3 million earned by "A Bug's Life" way back in 1998.
