'The Good Doctor' Premiere Spoilers: What to Know About the Korean Drama Remake

One of the upcoming shows to look forward to this month is "The Good Doctor," the latest project to come from Freddie Highmore following his lauded turn in "Bates Motel."

"The Good Doctor" is a remake of a critically acclaimed South Korean medical drama of the same name that ran in 2013 for 20 episodes. It starred actor Won Joo in the main role.

The show will follow the story of a young surgeon named Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Highmore) with autism and savant syndrome who decides to leave his quiet life in the country to be part of the esteemed surgical unit of the St. Bonaventure hospital.

Because of his condition, his inclusion to the team was met with skepticism by the staff, majority of whom believe that his difficulty to communicate will hinder his ability to function as an effective surgeon.

The trailer for "The Good Doctor" puts Shaun's abilities on display and what a true genius he really is, but other surgeons refuse to listen to him.

While they are usually proven wrong, to them, his autism still overshadows what he can do as they worry that while his "deficit," as referred to in the trailer, can help save lives, there is still the risk of that very same thing doing the opposite.

Highmore is joined in "The Good Doctor" by "The West Wing" alum Richard Schiff, who will serve as Shaun's main support and only believer in the hospital.

"The Good Doctor" also stars Antonia Thomas as Dr. Claire Browne, Nicholas Gonzalez as Dr. Neil Melendez, Chuku Modu as Dr. Jared Kalu, Beau Garrett as Jessica Preston, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews and Tamlyn Tomita as Allegra Aoki.

The official description for the series reads:

Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, his only advocate, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff), challenges the skepticism and prejudices of the hospital's board and staff when he brings him in to join the team. Shaun will need to work harder than he ever has before, as he navigates his new environment and relationships to prove to his colleagues that his extraordinary medical gifts will save lives.

"The Good Doctor" premieres Monday, Sept. 25, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
