'The Last of Us 2' Preorder, Price: Fan Theories Say Joel Is Dead
Ever since its teaser trailer was released, "The Last of Us 2" has sparked a number of fan theories about the possible storyline that the sequel will employ. And while it has yet to be confirmed, a popular one circulating online involves Joel's death.
As previously reported, the reveal trailer that was showcased at the PSX event not too long ago depicted an older Ellie playing the guitar and singing about how she is in the wrong. The clip saw her sitting in the bedroom of a house that is full of corpses that she presumably killed. Joel enters and asks her if she is really "gonna go through with this," to which she replies, "I'm gonna find and I'm gonna kill every last one of them."
After the trailer's release, several theories emerged indicating that Joel is actually already dead and that he was just a figment of Ellie's imagination in the clip. This is supported by the observations that Joel looked clean and young, despite Ellie looking messy and older.
The determined look on Ellie's face and her vow to "kill every last one of them" also seems to indicate that she is out to get revenge. It is possible that the Fireflies murdered Joel, and now Ellie wants to avenge his death.
Another popular theory states that Ellie and Joel's relationship will not be as good as it was because of Marlene's death. It can be recalled that Joel killed Marlene in "The Last of Us" in order to save Ellie. And because Ellie was very close to Marlene, Joel's hand in the latter's death could have resulted in animosity between the pair.
Unfortunately, Naughty Dog has yet to reveal anything else about the highly anticipated sequel, including its release date. It is expected to arrive sometime this year, though, and GameStop has already listed the game for pre-order for €74.99 (approximately $80).
