During a "The Last of Us 2" panel discussion at PlayStation Experience (PSX) 2016, the developers of the game revealed that the upcoming game will pick up five years after the final events in the original game. Also, director Neil Druckmann hinted during the discussion that "The Last of Us 2" will be all about hate.

Speculations about Joel's death started to emerge since the release of the recent trailer, where Joel looks like an apparition. Fans of the game know that in "The Last of Us," Joel was usually covered in blood and his clothes were always soiled, but in the recent trailer for the upcoming game, he looks very clean. Also, fans noticed that the character has not aged since "The Last of Us" despite the significant time jump, and his appearance in the clip is very limited.

Because of Joel's strangely clean appearance in the scene where the bloody Ellie plans to murder the fireflies, fans speculate that he could be an apparition. There are speculations that he will murder himself in "The Last of Us 2" since the trailer shows him carrying a gun.

Whether Joel is dead or alive in the upcoming game remains to be seen, but fans seem to have pretty good reasons to assume his death. "The Last of Us 2" is still under development so fans have to wait until Naughty Dog announces an official release date for the highly anticipated game.
