'The Last Ship' Canceled: Eric Dane Looking For Next Show as Season 6 Renewal Unlikely
"The Last Ship" won't likely get a sixth season renewal on TNT. Star Eric Dane is reportedly looking for his next show as work on the set for season 5 wrapped up.
Dane was reportedly asked to star in a new TV series following his commitments on "The Last Ship" season 5 but he passed on the project. Nevertheless, his schedule has supposedly cleared up now, which means he's free to take on new work.
"The Last Ship" filmed season 4 and 5 back to back for months with the fourth season currently running on air since early August on TNT. Season 5, on the other hand, won't begin its run on the cable channel until summer of 2018.
Earlier, rumors buzzed that "The Last Ship" will no longer return after season 5 because of Travis Van Winkle's Instagram. The actor shared a sentimental post that hinted the show's end, which he then deleted.
Following the actor's post, TNT issued a statement to categorically say that it gave the show a green light for season 5 and it could be the final season. The network, however, won't officially confirm the cancellation.
"It's far too early to make that determination," the network spokesperson told TV Line.
"The Last Ship" season 5, however, filmed with a definitive ending for Dane's character, Commander Tom Chandler. If the show comes back for season 6, it's likely that Dane will no longer be on the show.
Meanwhile, three episodes remain for airing on "The Last Ship" season 4 on TNT until Sunday, Oct. 8, at 10 p.m. EST. The finale will find the crew of USS Nathan James under Chandler facing a serious threat.
He will have to level off with the enemy as well as his battle his personal demons. His actions will have an impact on the fate of humanity.
Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane created "The Last Ship," which debuted on television in 2014. It was the summer's biggest hit series that year but ratings have declined since.
