'The Leftovers' Season 3 Spoilers, Plot News: Final Season's Trailer Teases End of the World

HBO has released the full trailer for the final season of its TV series, "The Leftovers."

The series is an adaptation of Tom Perotta's 2011 novel and is created by Perotta and Damon Lindelof. It follows Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), a police officer who lives in a world where two percent of the human population mysteriously disappears.

The world goes on but many people are having a hard time moving forward with their lives. This situation brought about the rise of cult activities like that of the Guilty Remnant, a group of mutes that mess with other people's lives.

The final season of the HBO series will be airing eight episodes and could also possibly feature the end of the world as they know it.

The 120-second trailer shows Kevin, Nora (Carrie Coon) and the rest of the group now living in Australia, frantically racing against time to possibly prevent another Sudden Departure.

Among the most compelling teases in the trailer is that Kevin could be the Messiah and Nora's children may have finally resurfaced. In the final moments of the trailer, Nora is seen talking on the phone, with someone telling her that she could see her family again.

"In my humble opinion, the ending is satisfying," Coon recently told TVLine. "There are a lot of directions the show could've taken, and, I feel in my Nora Durst heart, that they chose the right one. I approve of the direction the show went with."

Lindelof also previously teased that the final season of "The Leftovers" may not have the same feel that fans of the series are usually accustomed to. According to him, since the show is ending, "that's infusing it with a certain degree of energy that's different, perhaps, than the previous seasons."

Aside from Theroux and Coon, "The Leftovers" season 3 also stars Amy Brenneman, Kevin Carroll, Christopher Eccleston, Scott Glenn, Lindsay Duncan, Regina King, Jovan Adepo, Janel Moloney, Margaret Qualley, Jasmin Savoy-Brown, Liv Tyler and Chris Zylka.

"The Leftovers" season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, April 16 at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
