'The Man Who Invented Christmas' New Trailer Previews How Charles Dickens Wrote 'A Christmas Carol'
Christmas will come early this November, as a new film telling the story of how acclaimed author Charles Dickens created "A Christmas Carol" will be released.
Distribution company Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for "The Man Who Invented Christmas" starring Dan Stevens of "Beauty and the Beast" as Charles Dickens. Literary fans know that Dickens wrote a number of popular pieces, including "The Adventures of Oliver Twist," "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby," and perhaps his most famous work, "A Christmas Carol."
Set in 1843, "The Man Who Invented Christmas" focuses on Dickens and how he came up with "A Christmas Carol." The film is a whimsical take on the story and even features Dickens interacting with the various characters of his work.
The trailer opens with Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer, who plays Scrooge, introducing this new film. Apart from Scrooge, the trailer teases appearances from Tiny Tim and the Ghost of Christmas Past.
In the film, Dickens, who has admittedly run out of ideas, is pressured to write his next piece. He struggles coming up with a new story "until the story came to him." He draws inspiration from his own life and world, as well as the people who inhabit it. The trailer shows how he came up with Scrooge's name and popular catchphrase, "humbug." Through his brainstorming sessions, he begins to see characters from "A Christmas Carol" and interacts with them. But they disappear when he is suddenly disturbed.
Along with Stevens and Plummer, the film also stars Jonathan Pryce as John Dickens, Charles' father, and Donald Sumpter as Jacob Marley, a character from "A Christmas Carol." The film was adapted from Les Standiford's book of the same name and written by Susan Coyne. Bharat Nalluri directed the pic.
"The Man Who Invented Christmas" will premiere in U.S. cinemas on Nov. 22.
