'The Newsroom' Renewed for Season 3
HBO's hit series "The Newsroom" is coming back for a third season, according to star Jeff Daniels. However, while HBO has not made a formal announcement, one network executive said that the odds are incredibly favorable for a return.
"The odds are excellent – we're enormously happy with the show," HBO programming chief Michael Lombardo said at the Television Critics Association event in July. "Conversations with Aaron Sorkin are all about scheduling as he has other commitments. If we can figure the scheduling, I will be shocked if you would not be hearing about a renewal soon. The numbers this season are surpassing last season."
The show, which depicts the dramatic side of working in a high-pressure newsroom, is immensely popular with viewers. The second season premiere drew in 2.1 million viewers, which was high given its sophomore season. The series took a unique turn this season, focusing on one central storyline rather than handling multiple storylines simultaneously.

Daniels was nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for his work as anchorman Will McAvoy, who is a very complicated character. The series received three Emmy nominations for its freshman season alone and is likely to receive more as it continues.
Aaron Sorkin is known for his writing and work on such dramas as "The West Wing," which won multiple awards, and films such as "A Few Good Men" and "The American President." Viewers appear to either love or hate Sorkin's work, and with "The Newsroom," they are as equally divided.
"There's a 'we absolutely love you' and 'we absolutely hate you' to 'The Newsroom,' and this is a stamp of approval that says we're not going anywhere," Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter. "And all of us want to be doing this for years."
The two-part series finale will air on Sept. 15.
