'The Night Manager' News, Spoilers: Elizabeth Debicki Shines As Jed Marshall In New AMC Spy Miniseries
One of the highlights of Tuesday's episode of the BBC One/AMC espionage drama "The Night Manager" was the performance of Elizabeth Debicki, one of the show's stars.
The Australian actress, who is best known for appearing in films such as "Everest" (2015) and "The Great Gatsby" (2013), gave viewers a surprising and unexpected look at her character, Jed Marshall, in the episode, which found her coming face-to-face with a group of kidnappers.
In the latest episode of the spy miniseries, Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) entered the world of international arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) by saving Roper's son, Daniel, from the kidnappers. Of course, the whole thing was staged, and the episode even showed Pine crafting the criminal history that would make him a convincing addition to Roper's circle.

In the first episode, Jed seemed to be nothing more than typical arm-candy, a trophy hanging on Roper's arm. But in the second episode, the character was given more substance and her relationship with Roper was given depth and dimension.
Debicki's co-star, "Veep" actor Hugh Laurie, attributed Jed's complexity to Debicki's portrayal. In an interview with Zap2It, the actor said: "It's partly a testament to the incredible performance by Elizabeth Debicki - when people talk about incredible performances, what I mean is credible performances. She has invested Jed with a sort of - she is so much more than the decorative babe."
"The Night Manager" executive producer Stephen Garrett echoed Laurie's sentiment in a recent chat with Yahoo! TV. According to Garrett, while Jed was more of a lone ranger in the John le Carré novel on which the serial is based, they opted to give Jed's TV series version the backstory about her own child to further flesh out the character.
"We wanted her to be a much richer, more complex character," Garrett said. "A huge amount of work went into building her up."
"For me, this is a star-making role for Elizabeth Debicki," the "Night Manager" boss gushed. "For me, she's the next Cate Blanchett. That scene of the kidnapping just shows what she's capable of. She's extraordinary."
"The Night Manager" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.
