'The Orville' Episode 2 Spoilers: Alara to Step Up as Temporary Commander

"The Orville" is set to continue this week by delivering a good story centered on Alara Kitan (Halston Sage) and her character growth as temporary commander.

The show succeeds in delivering a good dose of character development in this week's episode called "Command Performance," with Alara Kitan carrying the show despite the awkward barrage of basic jokes between Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) and Commander Bortus (Peter Macon).

It was something that the comedy duo stretched out hoping to score a chuckle or two, as Den of Geek notes, until Captain Mercer, mercifully, decides to stop trying jokes with Bortus.

A preview clip also shows an uncomfortable appearance by Mercer's parents on the ship's screen, and viewers will get an idea of how Seth MacFarlane injects "The Family Guy" into a "Star Trek" comedy adaptation.

"Captain, I have laid an egg," Bortus, complete with Klingon-like forehead ridges, explained in a deadpan tone that's supposed to be humorous. "Klyden and I are going to have a child," he added.

The episode does pick up later when the focus shifts to Alara, who tries to reconcile her need to prove herself and her sudden position as temporary captain.

Granted, that's when the captain and Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) were held up for a bit, having been tricked into a trap, which conveniently looks like a replica of their old apartment so they can have a touching moment of their own.

Seth McFarlane reportedly does not want anyone to know what kind of show they will put out for the week, as his collaborator, David Goodman, shared with TV Guide. "Audiences for years have been open to this kind of show that isn't the same tone every week." he explained.

"If they're invested in the characters and in their lives, I think they'll show up. I hope," Goodman went on to say.

The video below is the preview of "The Orville's" humor, including the scene where Bortus tells the disbelieving Mercer that he laid an egg. The series airs for an entire hour every Thursday at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
