'The Orville' Season 1 Episode 7 Spoilers: Crew's Rescue Mission Encounters Problems

The team from "The Orville" will search for missing persons in the upcoming episode airing Thursday, Oct. 26. It won't, however, be a smooth-sailing mission.

Capt. Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) will order Command Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) to lead a search and rescue mission to a planet that's still stuck in the 21st century in "The Orville." They will have to bring home two missing anthropologists, who might be tried publicly as criminals.

While on this planet, however, Grayson's team will learn that punishments for criminals are decided through a public voting system. How will the team get out of this predicament in the episode titled "Majority Rule"?

Ratings for "The Orville" rose in its Live +35 Day multi-platform audience since the premiere last Sept. 10 on FOX. The sci-fi comedy is now the network's most watched show since the debut of "Empire" in 2015.

Fans of "Star Trek: The Original Series," which "The Orville" parodies, embrace the comedy as a fun unofficial reboot of the franchise. Viewers can't help but compare the show to the official reboot "Star Trek: Discovery" on CBS All Access.

MacFarlane created "The Orville" because he's admittedly a big fan of the sci-fi series as well as fantasy shows like "Twilight Zone."

"I hold a lot of these different franchises in very, very high regard," MacFarlane said. "And I kind of miss the forward-thinking, aspirational, optimistic place in science fiction that 'Star Trek' used to occupy."

"The Orville" might be filled with gags but its heart is in the positive spin that ends with each story. In contrast, "Star Trek: Discovery" throws darkness and despair in its plots.

"I miss the hopeful side of science fiction, which, you know, really, that kind of goes back to the roots of the genre, is that what can we achieve if we put our minds to it?" the actor, writer, and producer said.

"The Orville" airs Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. EST on FOX. The network ordered a total of 13 episodes for season 1.
