The Punisher Gets New TV Series on Netflix

Netflix and Marvel are planning on a collaboration to bring the "The Punisher" to television for a starring role. This development is definitely good news for the fans of the vigilante and rather unconventional superhero who first appeared on TV via Daredevil.

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, American actor Jon Bernthal will be reprising his role as the main character, Frank Castle, a military veteran who comes in with his unique way of bringing justice to the world.

If everything goes as planned, the series will be the sixth for the Netflix-Marvel Television partnership. Prior to the announcement of The Punisher TV edition, there already was a long list of upcoming Marvel characters expected to make their debuts, including Luke Cage, Iron First, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones is already confirmed for a second season while Luke Cage is expected in the fall. All of these Marvel heroes will then be working together for the mini-series, "The Defenders."

In a statement by the head of Marvel TV, Joseph Loeb, via E News, there supposedly is a popular demand for Frank Castle to star in his own TV series after the success in Daredevil. "We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon's stunning and powerful performance," he said, and also adding that Steve Lightfoot will be the show-runner.

Lightfoot meanwhile took on the challenge because he admired the main protagonist's volatility. "For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn't be more excited to dive into his world," the British TV writer and producer said.

The character of The Punisher was introduced in the Daredevil series as an expert in different fields including martial arts, guerilla warfare, and stealth. He also comes equipped with a wide array of weapons that he is expected to utilize in the new series.
