'The SpongeBob Musical' news: Featuring David Bowie
It was revealed that David Bowie will be involved in the upcoming Broadway production "The SpongeBob Musical."
Bowie will be contributing songs to the new musical, along with stellar musicians such as Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, and bands such as The Flaming Lips, They Might Be Giants, and Dirty Projectors. It was reported that the music will also include songs from rapper T.I., Plain White T's, Lady Antebellum, and Panic! At the Disco.
The president of Nickelodeon's content development and production told The Chicago Tribune, "All of those amazing composers are fans of SpongeBob. Music has always been an important part of the show and everyone saw this as a real creative challenge."
According to The Guardian, the co-producer of the hit Broadway musical "Kinky Boots," Adam Blanshay, commented on the involvement of the musicians. He also added that he believes the project will have an outstanding score. He said, "I think the whole concept of having each song scored by a different musician is brilliant and iconic and has never been done before. It will do nothing but attract audiences. Part of the fun will be listening to the score and guessing which song belongs to which artist. I think it's a brilliant concept."
The upcoming Broadway musical will be directed by Tina Landau. The story will explore the tale of the popular sea sponge and his adventures. It will open at the Chicago Oriental Theater. Landau stated that the actors will not use prosethetics; instead, they will use circus-style movements in order to move like cartoon characters. Music has been an important part of the "SpongeBob SquarePants" franchise. The Nickelodeon cartoon series had received a movie adaptation that also featured music from Motorhead, the Shins, and the Flaming Lips.
The SpongeBob Musical is expected to premiere on June 2016.
