"The Strain" Season 3 Episode 3 started where episode 2 left off. Eph (Corey Stoll) is trying to decide whether to exchange the Occido Lumen with his son's life.
Eph To Save Zack
The only way to get Zack (Max Charles) back is to trade the Lumen to The Master (Jack Kesy). Eph communicates with the Master through a strigoi. He found one strigoi at a convenient store and provides the time and the location for the exchange to happen. He informs the strigoi that his terms include seeing Zack safe and another human before they trade. Eph further instructs the strigoi that the place should be one that Zack knows about. It must be a place that they usually go.

"The Strain" Season 3 reveals that the life of Quinlan as a slave in Rome in 58 AD. He was caged and people were paid to watch him fed by his kidnappers. He was treated more of a circus animal than a strigoi-killing weapon.
Ancharia, an old lady came over and rescued him one day. She said that Quinlan bears The Master's mark. They lived together for two years.Ancharia told Quinlan that he is the savior of humanity and he needs to follow his destiny as the one to end The Master.
While in a safe place, a strigoi located Quinlan and almost ate Anarchia alive. Fortunately Quinlan fought them al.They needed to move fast so not to be located. So they travelled far and find a desolate place. However, The Master finds them and puts them to a test. The Master trapped Anarchia and Quinlan inside a cave.
A Mother-Son Relationship
After a while, Anarchia finally submits to starvation and becomes weak. She lets Quinlan feed on her so that he will be able to face The Master with strength. The Master is waiting for him at the other side of the cave. He finally gives in and drinks on Anarchia and faces The Master but cannot win over him.
The Strain Season 3 also is about a mother-son relationship. Aside from Quinlan's and The Master's showdown and Eph's worry about Zack's kidnapping the life of Zack as a baby is also being shown.
Meanwhile, Quinlan shares to Eph how he was born. He was half strigoi when The Master fed on his mother. He came from two humans but became a half strigoi by the time his pregnant mother was eaten by The Master. When The Master did that to his pregnant mother, he did not eat the child even though his heartbeat was clear enough for The Master. Killing The master will also mean Quinlan's death.
While Eph and Quinlan went off to meet The Master, a fight between the two happens and upon killing The Master, Quinlan also looks to be dead.
