What Makes 'The Surge' Different From Similarly Themed 'Prey'?

A lot of excellent titles are arriving this year 2017, and sometimes it becomes challenging for players to select which game they should use their hard-earned cash for. With such dilemma, another problem arises when two seemingly awesome titles are potentially great, and this is the case with the similarly themed "The Surge" and "Prey."

Bethesda Softworks' "Prey" is an upcoming science fiction/thriller, first-person shooter game in which the protagonist, Morgan Yu, tries to survive aboard the Talos 1, a space laboratory housing bloodthirsty extraterrestrial beings known as the Typhons. He uses skills acquired from the enemies in order to navigate freely and gain the upper hand.

"The Surge," on the other hand, is Focus Home Interactive's stab at creating an action role-playing game (RPG) in which the player uses items on the map or dismembered parts of enemies and craft them into weapons he will need to use to survive. The CREO complex met a terrible accident, mutating almost everything — both machine and human — and their goal is to eliminate the player.

As far as similarities go, both titles delve into the genre of survival, in which everything else aims to destroy the gamer. Both also have a stamina bar that is displayed when hacking and slashing, so every attack needs to be calculated perfectly. The two titles also have illustrious companies, Transtar and CREO, which went disarray due to catastrophic incidents.

There are differences, though, that sets them apart. Unlike "Prey," "The Surge" is an action RPG, making it different in term of view and gameplay. Moreover, the player picks up weapons from fallen enemies and makes them their own, and he doesn't craft anything, making it an even bigger challenge.

He doesn't imitate his foes' skills, instead uses them based on how he understands it, creating unpredictability. Of course, the biggest difference is that "The Surge" has rogue machines and mutated comrades as his enemies, while "Prey" battles against aliens.

Their release dates are so close to each other, so that's another problem. It will be up to the players' decision, and "The Surge" arrives on PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One and PC on May 16, 2017.
