'The Vampire Diaries' News: Ian Somerhalder Wants Series to Focus on Original Cast Members

Ian Somerhalder was close to a state of disbelief after realizing that he has already been part of the hit "The Vampire Diaries" series for seven years.

"I looked at myself in the mirror and I said 'God, man, 154 episodes, seven years of your life you've navigated through this', wow," he told E! News as he shared his sentiments on being Damon Salvatorre on the show.

The actor explained why he hasn't made some contemplation on his seven years on the show is that he keeps his thoughts busy with the possibilities that he wants to happen in the show's season eight run. With this, he expressed that he wants season eight to focus more on the original characters that lured the viewers of the show when it premiered via its first season some years ago.

"What made people fall in love with this story was its characters, not 40 of them, like eight of them, six of them—this core group of actors, of characters that really move you," he said.

Somerhalder believes that, if the "Vampire Diaries" focuses on the characters that they've learned to love from the onset of the show, whether it's going to happen with the current season or in the next, there is a greater possibility for the show to evoke different kinds of emotions among its share of audience.

"We don't know where that's going to go but leaving the audience with the fact that by that time they will have spent eight years of their life with these people, I want the audience to feel closer, more afraid, more in love, more in tune with these characters than they ever have been."

While it remains uncertain whether Somerhalder's wish for the show can eventually happen or not, fans who agree to his sentiments can be content for now that, at least, "The Vampire Diaries" has been renewed for another season. Earlier, it was rumored that the show's current season would be its last due to its spiraling down ratings.

Meanwhile, the "Days of Future Past" episode of "The Vampire Diaries," which Somerhalder directed, debuts this Friday.

"Days of Future Past" features Damon offering to have Stefan's (Paul Wesley) scar transferred to his body, a move that will only heighten the danger against his life and that of his brother.

"The Vampire Diaries" season seven episode 16 airs on April 1 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
