'The Vampire Diaries' Season 7 Spoilers: Heretics Are Big Bads, Stefan and Caroline Pair Off, Damon A 'Mess' Without Elena

"The Vampire Diaries" is returning for its seventh season this October 8 on the CW and this season has its main characters dealing with the loss of a major character in the show. At the end of the last season, Nina Dobrev, the actress who plays the character of Elena Gilbert, said that she is no longer returning in the next season. In the season 6 finale, Elena is rendered unconscious after the massacre at Joe and Alaric's wedding.

According to a report in Pop Sugar, Damon is "a mess" in season 7, as he tries to figure out what his life will be without Elena. The report cited that he will be doing "a lot of drinking" in the upcoming season, while he carries on his friendship with Bonnie. At the start of the season, Damon is seen with Alaric and Bonnie, drinking their way around Europe.

While Damon is dealing with his own emotional demons, a new group of villains will be making themselves known this season. Heretics, who are vampires and witches at the same time, will be making their presence felt. They are headed by Lily, and while she tries to keep them from making too much trouble, they simply cannot be held back. According to the show's producer, Caroline Dries, the heretics are six times worse than last season's villain, Kai.

As for the other main character, Stefan, who is Damon's brother, this season will be about his growing relationship with Caroline. Season 6 ended with Caroline walking away from Stefan, but the report seemed to reassure fans that season 7 will be different for the couple.

The report also cited the fact that season 7 will no longer be filled with "complicated mythology" or as Somerhalder put it, the show will not be "bogged down with mythology" and will go "back to that season one and two type of storytelling where it's dark and volatile and fun."
