'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 spoilers: Story to focus on brotherly love
Last season, fans of the hit The CW series "The Vampire Diaries" were saddened by the loss of its lead female character Elena (Nina Dobrev) after she falls into a coma so that her best friend Bonnie can live in the finale.
Nina Dobrev announced in advance that this would be her last season, so fans were treated to a riveting tearjerker of an episode, as Elena said her final good-byes to everyone she loves with fans knowing that she wouldn't magically get better next season. However, there was a surprising twist at the very end as fans saw a seemingly postapocalyptic Mystic Falls and Damon mysteriously standing on top of the clock tower.
The new season will see some interesting changes as the brothers Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) will become closer, following the loss of Elena and the discovery of their mother, while Alaric (Matthew Davis) will turn to alcohol after his tragic loss. The loss of Jo and his unborn children will cause him to turn to some very unconventional methods of coping that may include contacting the dead. Fortunately, he will find himself bouncing back as the season progresses.

Executive producer Caroline Dries spoke about the upcoming season and the family drama that will happen. "[Stefan and Damon] feel like [Lily] has this whole other family. Because Enzo is like a free-agent and Lily's got her heretic family, and they're like: "What's going on here?" There's a real "us vs. them" mentality and the Heretics are the bad guys — and Lily and Enzo are friends with the bad guys," she said. Furthermore, she promises a lot of bromance moments between the brothers and also between Damon and Alaric.
She added that there will be a different kind of love story this time around. "We were like, 'How do we replace Elena in the triangle between the brothers?' And what kind of naturally happened is Lily is the third point in the triangle. They each love her and hate her in a different way, so she's more of the Katherine. They have different feelings toward her, and she's able to manipulate them and love them differently. She was trying to basically turn them against each other, but they're like, 'You know what? I've been brothers with him a long time, so I think I'm going to side with my bro," she said.
The brand-new season will also introduce some new cast members. Actors Justice Leak, Jaiden Kaine, Tim Kang, and Todd Lasance will join the show. Leak will play Malcolm, a clean-cut heretic who is not afraid of death. Also appearing in the new season is a new trouble-making blood-sucking lesbian couple who are out to cause problems in the town.
The Vampire Diaries will return on Oct. 8.
