'The Walking Dead' Finale Death yet to Be Filmed; Jeffrey Dean Morgan Understands Fans' Frustration About Season 6 Cliffhanger

Though various fan theories about who was killed off in the explosive season 6 finale of AMC's "The Walking Dead" have popped up in the days since it aired, "TWD" executive producer and director Greg Nicotero now says that they haven't even filmed the part where Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) kills one of the Alexandrians.

On Sunday, April 3, "The Walking Dead" aired its long-awaited season 6 finale, introducing its new main villain Negan and setting the stage for the death of one of the show's most beloved characters. However, the finale ended on a cliffhanger, leaving fans to wonder if it was Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Carl (Chandler Riggs), or Maggie (Lauren Cohan) who met his/her end via Lucille, Negan's barbed wire-covered baseball bat.

Also in the list of potential victims are Alexandrians Rosita (Christian Serratos), Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Aaron (Ross Marquand), and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green).

Nicotero recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the Season 6 finale and defended the choice to end on a major cliffhanger, saying, "I think it's the best way to wrap up this story."

"I thought it would have been a little cheap to kill a major character in the last few minutes of the show," the "TWD" boss said.

According to Nicotero, having the Alexandrians on their knees in front of Negan was the "perfect ending" for the season. "…No one is coming to save them, and it's the first time we've seen our group like this," he said.

As for who was killed, Nicotero said, "We have not filmed it yet, and I don't know if the person knows yet or not."

Meanwhile, "The Good Wife" actor Morgan, who made his much-anticipated debut as Negan in the finale, recently told Entertainment Weekly that he understands why fans are miffed about the episode, but that he trusts that the people behind "TWD" have made the right decision.

"I understand the fans' frustration, I get that; that being said … I have to trust these writers and showrunners," he said.

"The Walking Dead" returns with its seventh season in October.
