His character got more confident, and possibly too confident about his plans after he was forced to care for Maggie Greene. He reassured her by saying that they can do anything, seemingly forgetting that they still need to deal with Negan.

Andrew Lincoln was present during the Walking Dead's Hall H presentation at the 2016 Comic Con in San Diego. Fans and followers of the epic show asked him what his thoughts were on Rick's decisions for himself and his family. Lincoln said that, indeed, there was a shot of overconfidence in his character. Nevertheless, he believes that it was the best thing Rick could do in such a situation.
"I think it was probably the right thing to do but with too much pride behind it," Lincoln replied. This seems to be the first time that Rick feels so powerless.
A broken man on Season 7
We'll see a completely broken man in Season 7 as Rick Grimes feels powerless against Negan. His character will be completely opposite to what he was in the previous seasons. Lincoln said that Rick is broken because everything that he had worked for and everything his loved ones died for will be shattered.
Facing Negan will be very difficult for Rick, especially standing up for the rest of his family members. His will and his pride will be tested as he stands by his family in the first few episodes of Season 7. Lincoln also said that his character would be in a bad situation. However, if he can make it in the first episode, then he will surely be a changed man. More updates on the Walking Dead's latest season are expected as the show nears its air date.
