'Thimbleweed Park' Release Date, Details: Retro-Inspired Game Slated for March Release

"Thimbleweed Park," a retro-inspired point-and-click game developed by Terrible Toybox is confirmed to be launching for the Xbox One, Mac, Linux and Windows on March 30.

The game centers on several mysteries that players need to solve. First is a mystery murder case that happened in Thimbleweed Park. The other mysteries take place in different locations. One case involves a mysterious curse that caused a clown named Ransome to wear his make-up permanently, while another man woke up in a hotel only to find out that he is dead, without any idea how it all happened. Another case involved the family of a certain Delores Edmund where she and her siblings have been called together to hear  the details of a rich uncle's last will.

GameSpot's Scott Butterworth said in his preview that the characters in the game "are all deeply connected" and that all of them are being watched.

The game is seen from a third-person perspective and employs a point-and-click system which is reminiscent of early 90s games such as "The Secret of Monkey Island."

Players need to solve puzzles through verb-driven interactions that players can choose and arrange at the bottom of the screen.

Game designer Ron Gilbert explained that most modern games now lack the charm that these old-school games had. He also said that there are plenty of opportunities for humor for this type of puzzle-solving gameplay.

The developers, however, incorporated several minor design changes from the 90s point-and-click games to make it easily navigable for modern players.

"We're trying to adjust all of those little design decisions with people's more modern expectations for how things work," Gilbert said, according to GameSpot.

Aside from its Windows, Linux, Mac and Xbox One release, "Thimbleweed Park" will be made available for iOS and Android players by the later part of the year.
