'Thor: Ragnarok' Director Taika Waititi Reveals Why He Won't Direct a 'Star Wars' Film

"Thor: Ragnarok" is still a few days away from its release, but critics are already declaring it a success for the simple fact that it was Taika Waititi who helmed it. In a recent interview, the renowned filmmaker talked about his upcoming film and why he is willing to direct more movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but never "Star Wars."

According to Waititi, he does not like to helm a film from the popular Disney sci-fi franchise because in doing so, he will not have the freedom to improvise. Waititi said he finds the "Star Wars" franchise particularly hard because there is not much room for someone like him who loves to rely on his wits and is inclined to comedy.

The director went on to compare the MCU to "Star Wars" when it comes to tone. "Through its narrow canon, the tone of 'Star Wars' has always been determinedly self-serious, whereas the Marvel movies, like decades of comics they sprang from, veer wildly from high drama to low comedy. And improvisation has been a tool in every Marvel movie since Robert Downey, Jr. riffed his way through 'Iron Man,'" said Waititi.

Although the film has not yet been released, "Thor: Ragnarok" has drawn so much attention because of its distinctly different tone, which is pretty apparent in all its trailers. Based on the teasers for the film, it is clear that it is going to be much more lighthearted than the previous installments in the "Thor" franchise.

"Thor: Ragnarok" is estimated to earn $90 million domestically on its opening day, with critics predicting that it will be one of MCU's most successful films for this year. The film will find Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder, alongside Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Cate Blanchett as Hera, and Jeff Goldblum as The Grandmaster.

"Thor: Ragnarok" opens in theaters on Nov. 3.
