'Thor: Ragnarok' News: Chris Hemsworth Shares How Sibling Rivalry With Brother Liam Helped Him Land Role
It is not new to fans of the "Thor" franchise that Chris Hemsworth's character is caught up in a feud with his brother Loki. Recently, the actor revealed that he also had some sort of a sibling rivalry with his brother Liam in real life, although his younger sibling is far from Loki. In fact, according to him, this rivalry helped him get the role of Thor in the popular franchise.
In a recent interview with W Magazine, Chris revealed that his road to Marvel fame was not as smooth-sailing as everybody might have thought it was. According to him, his family had a significant role to play in his efforts to be worthy enough to portray the God of Thunder. The actor recounted how his first audition for the role had failed, and how his brother Liam successfully got callbacks for the part. However, when Liam did not land the role either, Chris got motivated to try his luck again.
Chris revealed that none of the frontrunners to play Thor was actually offered the role, leaving the opportunity open. "I came in kind of with a little, I guess, motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me. It's a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. Then it moved pretty quick from there. It was cool," he said.
Chris also shared that when he learned that the role was still open, he recorded another audition tape inside a hotel in Vancouver where he was shooting "Cabin in the Woods." He credited his mother Leonie for reading Anthony Hopkins' part for him for his second audition, adding that at the time, he was more motivated because of his frustration that Liam "had gotten futher" than he did.
Chris is set to reprise his role as the God of Thunder in "Thor: Ragnarok," where he will deal with the new adversary, Hela, and his brother Loki. The film will open in theaters on Nov. 3.
