Tim Tebow News: Former NFL Player Comes Under Fire for Praising 'The Shack'
Former National Football Leaugue (NFL) player Tim Tebow has come under fire on Twitter after explicitly praising the controversial film "The Shack." The film is based on William P. Young's 2007 novel with the same name, which has been the subject of debate among many Christians because of its twisted depiction of God.
Last Friday, Tebow posted on Twitter, "Got a sneak peek of @TheShackMovie last night. Great reminder that God is with us in our highs & lows & LOVES us no matter what!" The post earned 1,000 likes from Tebow's fans but was also widely criticized.
One fan named Jessica Brown responded to his tweet, "I can't support this movie nor have I the book. Scripturally unsound."
While some fans simply expressed their dislike for the film and the novel, some went as far as unfollowing Tebow and even accusing him of heresy. "@TimTebow @TheShackMovie and the book are heretical. Unfollow. Sorry," wrote Bill Prange. Another follower tweeted, "Except for the heresy and misinterpretation of a holy God. Great reminder to read our bibles."
Since the novel was released, it has been criticized for its poor portrayals. The novel depicts God not as a man but as a woman. Moreover, critics claim that it contains unbiblical theology, including the messages that God will never judge humans for their sins, that God submits himself to man since He does not want them to be slaves to the divine will, that there is no punishment in hell, that all men are automatically forgiven with or without repentance since Jesus already paid for their sins on the cross, and that all men go to heaven.
Supporters of "The Shack" say the messages contained in the film should not be taken literally. However, critics argue that it provides a "false, blasphemous portrayal of God" and is therefore very dangerous.
