Tim Tebow News, Updates: Tebow to Make Spring Debut Against Red Sox

With their roster depleted thanks to the World Baseball Classic, the New York Mets will have to summon some players from their minor league camp to fill the holes in their lineup.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Tim Tebow is one of the minor leaguers called up to play in split-squad games this week. He will make his Grapefruit League debut on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox and MLB.com's Anthony DiComo said he will start the game as designated hitter.

Not bad for a former professional football player who is transitioning to a new sport. The Heisman Trophy winner has not played organized ball since high school before he decided to pursue a career in professional baseball.

Well, Tebow will be tested right away. Guess who's taking the mound? It's reigning American League Cy Young award winner Rick Porcello.

"I don't think he's going to make our team but it's great for the organization and great for the fans. He's a pretty famous guy and it will be fun to get him out there," Mets manager Terry Collins said, according to USA Today.

Aside from the game against the Red Sox, Tebow is also scheduled to play against the Houston Astros on Friday. Playing him in home games makes a lot of sense. He's going to sell tickets and the fans clearly want to see him play.

"Obviously, the Mets prefer to have Tebow play home games to increase interest and attendance, though the game against Boston (because Red Sox fans tend to travel well) was expected to draw a significant crowd anyway. In addition, the game against Boston will be shown live on SNY at 1 p.m.," Sherman said in his report.

Tebow will get the chance to showcase his baseball skills this week and he should make the most of it.
