'Titanfall 2' News: Lead Writer Reveals Sequel Will Include Single-Player Mode and More
"Titanfall's" lead writer has recently revealed new information about the upcoming sequel. He said the new game will have single-player mode and a TV series spin-off is under development as well.
Developer Respawn Entertaiment started working on the sequel in late 2014 so the title should be shaping up. Electronic Arts Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson commented during the publisher's third quarter earnings call last month that the game is "looking fantastic."
Wilson did not hint at anything specific, but now fans have more information about the sequel, thanks to series' lead writer Jesse Stern. He dished out some juicy details about "Titanfall 2" in an interview with Forbes recently. Here are the highlights.
Single-player mode
When "Titanfall" launched in 2014, the title had no single-player mode as developer Respawn Entertainment was strapped for cash then. Now with sufficient financial resources, the developer promises that "Titanfall 2" will release with both multiplayer and single-player modes.
Multiplayer mode on all platforms
Stern also revealed great news for non-Xbox owners. He said "Titanfall 2's" multiplayer will not only be "better than it was the first time around" but will also be widely available on "all platforms."
Colonial warfare in space
For those wondering what the plot of the sequel will be, Stern reveals their vision is to tell the story of a "grand global colonial warfare" that retells the story of the American Revolution and the American Civil War in space. This means "immigrants moving out to the new frontier of an inhabitable planet." However, Stern clarifies that "Titanfall 2" will not be a traditional sci-fi game in the sense that it will look at how space immigration would happen "practically."
"What inspires us is the junction of technological advancement with the inevitability of conflict and war and what the next war might look like," Stern told Forbes. "In Titanfall 2 there will be a lot of [scenes] where science meets magic, but keeping it grounded and dirty and human and real."
TV series
Respawn is also looking at expanding the video game series into scripted and animated TV series. Although it's too early to tell if this plan will bear fruit considering costs, Stern reveals a spin-off is currently in the works, with Respawn and Lionsgate TV collaborating to bring a TV series set in the "Titanfall" universe to viewers in the future.
Release date
As for "Titanfall 2's" release date, Stern says the sequel could come out "sometime late this year or early next." This within the ballpark of what EA previously said in its third quarter earnings call.
