'Tom Clancy's The Division:' Ubisoft Reveals Map Size, No Brooklyn at Launch

As the launch of "Tom Clancy's The Division" nears, more and more details about the upcoming game are coming out. Among the new information revealed so far include the game's map size and that only one New York borough is included at launch but it won't be Brooklyn.

Players of "Tom Clancy's The Division" will find that the game's open world environment will be set in Midtown Manhattan. Initially, Ubisoft showcased Brooklyn as the game's location during its demonstration at E3 2013. However, it is common practice among developers to change the game prior to launch. Still, the modification is not without a solid basis as Ubisoft has revealed there's a story-based reason behind its decision.

"We are going with Midtown Manhattan … because of the 1 to 1 re-creation and the way the pandemic has [happened]," the game's Creative Director Magnus Jansen told Examiner.com. "Basically, everything has been hit and there are no more resources because everyone tried to get out. There is no more gasoline in the cars, there is no traffic, you're on foot."

The setting should not pose a problem for players, according to The Examiner, as the game is "extremely dense" and there's plenty of activities to do.

"With the level of detail we have, doing Midtown Manhattan is a huge open-world experience and more than enough to sink your teeth into," Jansen said. "It is a very sizable open-world game."

Those who are hoping to explore Brooklyn, or other boroughs for that matter, may still be able to do so. Ubisoft has previously said DLC will be available to "The Division," and Gamespot speculates it's possible for the developer-publisher to add Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island post-launch. On the matter of DLCs, nothing is confirmed as of the moment.

"Tom Clancy's The Division" will have its closed beta on Jan. 28 to 31. The game will release to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 8.
