Tom Hanks and Emma Watson to Star in Sci-Fi Movie Together
News has just emerged Tom Hanks and Emma Watson will be making a sci-fi drama movie together.
Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks will soon be in "The Circle," a tech thriller about the power of the Internet, and "Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson has just signed on to play opposite him.
"The Circle" is based on the 2013 science fiction novel demonizing Internet companies written by American novelist, Dave Eggers. When the movie rights were initially bought by Playton and Likely Story, "Ex Machina" star Alicia Vikander had initially been attached to the role.
However, after Vikander was tempted over to star opposite Matt Damon in "Bourne 5," Watson, 25, replaced her for the role of a young woman who is hired on for a position in an Internet company, "The Circle."
Based on the book, the film tells about an Internet monopoly conglomerate that ties up all of its customers' lives together, including social media, email, shopping, and other day-to-day activities all into one system to create a single online identity amidst a new era of transparency and civility.
In the course of her new job, Watson meets and interacts with Hank's character, a "mysterious older man," as described by The Wrap.
The movie, which will tackle the timely issue of online privacy, and the collection of data for the purpose of surveillance, will be directed by "The Spectacular Now's" James Ponsoldt, co-produced by author Eggers, as well as Gary Goetzman and Anthony Bregman.
Watson, who is currently filming Walt Disney Pictures' "Beauty and the Beast," where she will be appearing in theaters on March 17, 2017 as Belle, has gotten a chance to work with other big name stars since she left the "Harry Potter" franchise in 2011.
She has previously starred with Kenneth Branagh and Michelle Williams in 2011's "My Week with Marilyn," opposite Logan Lerman in the critically acclaimed "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" in 2012, with James Franco in the successful 2013 disaster comedy, "This is the End," and alongside Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly in Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic "Noah" last year.
"The Circle" is scheduled for production beginning September, with no release date announced as of yet.
