Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep Star in 'The Post' from Steven Spielberg; Teaser Released

It's been two years since Steven Spielberg directed a movie. His latest film, which stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, will hit theaters in December and 20th Century Fox just released the first teaser to "The Post."

The film features Streep as The Washington Post's first female publisher Katharine Graham and Hanks as her editor Ben Bradlee. The movie finds its basis in the true story about how the news agency followed the trail of one of the biggest stories in American history.

It involved a government cover-up of the Vietnam War that four U.S. presidents knew about. The press dubbed this as the Pentagon Papers scandal.

At that time, the White House pressured news agencies to drop its story. President Richard Nixon even went as far as to file an injunction to inhibit the press from publishing the Pentagon Papers but the Supreme Court meddled.

"We could all go to prison," Hank's Bradlee said in the teaser. "What will happen if we don't publish? We will lose. The country will lose."

"The Post" is also a movie about the challenges powerful women face, especially when men don't think they are capable of being the boss.

"The Post" is already getting some Oscar buzz even as awards season in Hollywood has yet to kick off. Beyond the conflict between the government and the Fourth Estate or the news media, "The Post" is also a movie about the challenges powerful women face, especially when men don't think they are capable of being the boss.

The film also stars Sarah Paulson (Tony Bradee), Bob Odenkirk (Ben Bagdikian), Bradley Whitford (Fritz Beebe), Matthew Rhys (Howard Simons), Carrie Coon (Meg Greenfield), Alison Brie (Lally Weymouth), David Cross (Phil Geyelin) and Jesse Plemons (Roger Clark). Liz Hannah and Josh Singer wrote the screenplay.

"The Post," which was originally titled "The Paper," will be in limited theaters on Dec. 22. The film's wide release will be on Jan. 12, 2018.
