'Tomb Raider' movie news: Female directors short-listed?
It was reported that the upcoming "Tomb Raider" movie is currently being developed with several female directors short-listed.
Speculations revealed that the project currently has Kathryn Bigelow from "Zero Dark Thirty," Catherine Hardwicke of "Twilight," and Mimi Leder of "The Leftovers" short-listed to direct the new video game movie. The newest Tomb Raider movie is expected to tell the story of a younger Lara Croft.
However, it was confirmed by Bigelow's representative that the rumors are false. Bigelow allegedly has not spoken with anyone about the project and has no interest in pursuing the film. Bigelow has worked on several projects such as "The Hurt Locker," therefore if the rumors were true, this would be the next feature film after Zero Dark Thirty.
Tricia Brock was also rumored to have been offered the role of director. She has worked on TV series such as episodes of "Girls" and "The Walkind Dead." However, it was confirmed that she had turned down the offer to lead the project.
With that, the rumors of the short list were put in question. Meanwhile, the representatives of the other two names on the list have yet to confirm the news. As for the script, it was reported that Evan Daugherty was asked to work on the script. Daugherty has worked on several projects such as "Divergent," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and "Snow White and the Huntsman." The story is expected to focus on Lara Croft's first expedition. It will serve as Lara Croft's origin story, which was featured in the 2013 Tomb Raider video game. An upcoming sequel to the game is expected to release this Nov. 10.
While the Tomb Raider franchise has adapted the story into a movie before with Angelia Jolie taking on the role of Lara Croft, there has yet to be an announcement on who will take on the role for the upcoming film.
