'Top of the Lake: China Girl' Premiere Date, Cast News: 'Game of Thrones' Actress Gwendoline Christie Plays 'Complete Opposite of Brienne'

Gwendoline Christie is best known for playing Brienne of Tarth on "Game of Thrones." The actress' next show, "Top of the Lake: China Girl," premieres on BBC and the Sundance Channel this week and she talks about what it is like to play a different role than the warrior.

Christie stars as the investigator Miranda in "Top of the Lake: China Girl" opposite Elisabeth Moss (Robin Griffin) and Nicole Kidman (Julia). Her character brings comic relief to an otherwise dark and bleak series.

"Miranda is like an enthusiastic puppy," Christie told New York Times. "[She] is the complete opposite of Brienne," Christie said, adding, "Miranda is totally impetuous. She's also incredibly gauche. She's gawky. She's awkward. She's too much."

Christie confessed that she wrote series creator and director Jane Campion to be in the show. Her character has been added to the second installment as Moss' character's new partner.

"Top of the Lake: China Girl" takes place in Australia and will center on the death of an Asian woman that both women will investigate. Miranda and Robin won't easily warm up to each other and this will bring more frustration to Moss' character.

"Top of the Lake: China Girl" will be told in six episodes and will run for three consecutive nights. Moss reprised her role from 2013, which was then set in New Zealand.

Moss said she loves playing Robin and won't mind reprising the role for a third season.

"I'm much more animated I think and she's much more still and closed off, so for me it's fun to do something so different," Moss said. "I was basically hounding Jane for three years to do another one."

"Top of the Lake: China Girl" began on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 9:00 p.m. EST on Sundance and will air all episodes on the same time schedule for the rest of the week.
