'Transformers' Spinoff and Sequel Writers Identified

Two months ago, Paramount and the folks behind the "Transformers" franchise: Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg and Lorenzo di Bonaventura chose Akiva Goldsman to "incubate ideas" for spinoff films and a multi-part sequel for the "Transformers." They have assembled their "writers room."

The idea is that this "writers room" together with Goldsman will brainstorm and put together ideas for the sequels and spinoffs, much like how James Cameron is putting together the "Avatar" series of sequels.

According to Deadline, big names in science fiction are being considered to be part of the team. These include "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway of "Iron Man," "Pacific Rim 2's" Zak Penn and lastly, Jeff Pinkner of "Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Lost." The report also says that the deals are yet to be sealed but considering the background of these writers, this is a ''major-league lineup" to join Goldsman as he takes the lead.

Paramount Studios is reportedly taking this exercise seriously. It is apparently a "major priority" for the studio's new Motion Picture Group President Marc Evans. They seem to be trying to follow the footsteps of "Avatar" and Disney with its Marvel film franchise when it comes to creating a successful lineup of movies for the studio, which, given the rate of success of these other franchises, is not surprising.

The "Transformers" franchise only most recently proved that it has the potential to bring big business and box office success, especially after it got a boost when it made some changes to its star lineup. The last film, "Age of Extinction," grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, with a bulk of the earnings coming from China. The film reportedly generated $250 million in net profits after paying the fees for its director Michael Bay and its lead star Mark Wahlberg.
