'Transparent' Season 5 News: Jill Gordon Tapped as New Showrunner for Amazon Dramedy

Jill Gordon will officially serve as the new showrunner for "Transparent" when the Amazon drama returns for season 5.

Reports confirmed that Gordon will take on day-to-day showrunner responsibilities when production for season 5 begins. While season 4 is scheduled to premiere this fall, the series was already greenlighted for a fifth installment with a production start date set next year.

Gordon assumes the position once Jill Soloway steps down as showrunner after season 4. Soloway will continue to be involved in the show as director, executive producer and writer. Most recently, Gordon served as series creator for NBC's "Heartbeat."  She has also worked as producer and writer for popular shows such as "Doogie Howser, M.D.," "90210" and "The Wonder Years."

News of the major behind-the-scene changes comes as the Emmy winner has started dividing her time between multiple upcoming projects. She is the co-creator/executive producer of another Amazon comedy, "I Love Dick," which is currently awaiting word on whether it will be renewed or canceled.

Having debuted in 2014, "Transparent" follows an ordinary family in Los Angeles and their lives after discovering that the person they knew as their father Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) is actually transgender.

The series has won several awards throughout its run. Tambor has since received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and he is nominated for the same category again this year. Soloway has also bagged two Emmys for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series since "Transparent" began. In addition, the dramedy has been nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series twice.

Not much is known about the upcoming season 5 since production has yet to begin. Aside from Tambor, the series also stars Gaby Hoffmann, Judith Light, Amy Landecker, Kathryn Hahn and Jay Duplass as members of the Pfefferman family.

The fourth season of "Transparent" premieres Friday, Sept, 22 on Amazon Prime.
