Trevor Noah's Contract as 'The Daily Show' Host Renewed Through 2022
Comedy Central is keeping Trevor Noah on "The Daily Show" for five more years.
Noah's contract has been extended until 2022, according to reports. News of the host's new deal was announced on Thursday.
"I'm thrilled to be continuing this amazing journey with both fans of 'The Daily Show' and Comedy Central," said Noah in a press release. "It's really exciting to renew this contract for either five more years or until Kim Jong Un annihilates us all — whichever one comes first."
As part of the renewal contract, Noah will also host and produce annual year-end "Daily Show" specials starting this winter. Comedy Central's press release notes the late-night program "will no longer take for granted that humankind has made it to another December 31st," so they will be releasing year-end specials from here on out.
The new deal means that aside from the midterm elections next year, he will also cover the presidential election in 2020.
Noah replaced Jon Stewart as "The Daily Show" host two years ago. At the time, there was plenty of speculation on whether viewers would reject or embrace him. The series also had a rocky start when he stepped in — declining significantly in the ratings.
For this year, Noah's numbers have consistently improved, with his highest-rated week being recorded in May. The program has become more popular as well, as Comedy Central previously announced that it is the most-watched daily late-night talk show among millennials.
Noah's new deal comes on the heels of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" being renewed by HBO this week. Similar to Comedy Central, HBO has also handed out a big renewal by keeping the late-night series on air through 2020.
"The Daily Show" airs every night at 11 p.m. EDT on Comedy Central. Episodes may also be viewed through the Comedy Central app.
