'Trolls 2' Release Date, News Details: Sequel Slated for April 2020 Release
Universal Pictures, in partnership with DreamWorks Animation, announced that a "Trolls" sequel is coming up in 2020.
The animated adventure film, which was famous for its quirky characters and feel-good soundtrack, was released in U.S. theaters last November 2016 and grossed over $342.8 million in sales worldwide as of March 1.
The most popular song in its soundtrack, "Can't Stop the Feeling," performed by Justin Timberlake, was nominated for Best Original Song during this year's Academy Awards and was also chosen as the opening song for the event.
In addition, Timberlake and Anna Kendrick are also confirmed to reprise their voice roles for the characters Branch and Poppy respectively.
However, the director of the first "Trolls" installment, Mike Mitchell, is not returning to work on the sequel as he is currently working on another installment under "The Lego Movie" franchise which has an expected release date by Feb. 9, 2019.
Universal scheduled "Trolls 2" for an April 10, 2020 release date.
The "Trolls" movie franchise was inspired by Thomas Dam's famous mini dolls that were introduced in the 1960s. The dolls are noted for having colorful and furry up-combed hair.
The 2016 movie had an all-star cast. Aside from Kendrick and Timberlake, it also featured the voices of Zooey Deschanel (Bridget), Russell Brand (Creek), James Corden (Biggie), singer Gwen Stefani (DJ Suki), and John Cleese (King Gristle, Sr.) among others. As of the moment, only Kendrick and Timberlake are confirmed to reprise their part in the sequel.
The first movie did not just acquire commercial success, but it also garnered mostly positive reviews, with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 74 percent.
Prominent news establishments such as the Chicago Sun-Times and New York Times expressed their praise for the film - emphasizing how the animated film amuses young and old audiences alike.
The film's "Can't Stop the Feeling" song on a Grammy this year for the Best Song Written for Visual Media category.
