'TRON 3' News, Cast, Spoilers: 'TRON 3' Had 'Incredible' New Characters

Disney definitely has quite a hectic movie lineup in the following years. With a lot of sequels in tow, in partnership with the distribution of some big studios likes Pixar, Warner Bros., and Marvel movies, perhaps one of the more surprising franchise cancellations would have to be of "TRON."

Many were honestly quite excited when the third movie was announced. Earning $400 million worldwide for "TRON" in 2010, the movie was somehow an unexpected success and so "TRON: Legacy" had been fully expected and well-received as well. Fans have been eagerly waiting for "TRON 3" to hit theaters soon, and despite being on hold for a while, it was reported that the movie is getting ready for production in Vancouver this fall. However, Disney shocked fans — and perhaps everyone involved in the set — when it decided to pull the plug on it.

According to Garrett Hedlund, star of the franchise, he also had no idea why Disney's decision went this way. He mentions this during an interview with Coming Soon, where he was promoting his latest film, "Pan." He goes, "Yeah, it was, and it was just sort of I guess put on hold. I don't have all the answers. I mean, ever since [TRON] Legacy came out, they'd always wanted to get a concrete story for the next one." He also further shared what could have been in store for viewers if it had pushed through, "I knew that the new characters that we were introducing were going to be incredible. The script was really getting to a place to where everybody was getting really excited. The common comment was, 'This one's going to blow Legacy out of the water.' I was really excited for that."

As of now, perhaps it will be a continuous mystery as why the "TRON" franchise suddenly ended the way it did, despite earning as much as the recent summer hit "Ant-Man," which got a sequel. Perhaps Disney is more focused on Marvel movies for now, especially with its cinematic universe entering Phase 3, the studio just might have too much in its hands. Hedlund further adds that perhaps one day the franchise might pick up again as he says, "Maybe there'll be a time and a place for it. Maybe it will be resembling to the space that was in between from the '82 version to maybe I'll be… I'm going to be the Jeff Bridges in the next one and our press junkets, we'll be talking about how, 'It's been 30 years since I've been in that suit, man.'"
