'True Detective' Season 3 Cast, Plot News: Viggo Mortensen Joins Mahershala Ali?

Is Viggo Mortensen joining "True Detective" season 3 on HBO? Academy Award winner Maheshala Ali posted a photo of them on his social media, which immediately sparked speculations.

Ali shared the picture of him and Mortensen on Instagram with a simple caption: "2018" with a lightning emoji. It sparked reactions from fans who thought the actors will be working on "True Detective" season 3.

Mortensen is best known for his role as Aragon who eventually became the king in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The actor is also in "A History of Violence," "Hidalgo," and "Appaloosa."

Alas, Ali and Mortensen are indeed co-stars but not in the HBO series. They are filming "Green Book" with director Peter Farrelly.

"It's based on a thing that used to be called the 'Negro Motorist's Green Book,' published from 1936 to 1966," the director shared. "It was a book for African Americans on the road – where they could stay, where they could eat, where they could get gas."

Meanwhile, the filming schedule for "True Detective" season 3 has not been detailed when HBO confirmed the show's renewal. Reports cited, however, that the next installment will take place in the Ozarks, a sleepy resort town in Missouri and Ali will play Wayne Hays, an Arkansas detective. HBO hired Jeremy Saulnier ("Blue Ruin") to direct season 3.

Nic Pizzolatto, who wrote the first two seasons, is still writing the scripts to "True Detective" season 3. HBO executives previously said they won't be rushing the scribe in completing the story just to meet a production schedule.

"True Detective" is a crime anthology drama that first aired in 2014. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson led the first season, while Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams starred in season 2.

Both installments had eight episodes each. Cary Joji Fukunaga ("Beast of No Nation") directed all episodes of season 1 while season 2 had several directors including Justin Lin ("Fast and Furious 3 to 6").
