'True Detective' Season 3: David Milch Tapped to Work With Nic Pizzolatto; Two Episodes Written
Fans of "True Detective" will be happy to know that work on the HBO crime anthology series is already moving. Emmy Award-winning writer-producer David Milch has been tapped to work with creator Nic Pizzolatto.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Milch, known for his work on "Deadwood" and "NYPD Blue," will be working closely with Pizzolatto, although the exact terms of their collaboration have not been finalized. Pizzolatto has already written the first two episodes of what could be "True Detective's" potential third season. However, HBO has yet to give the show an official renewal order at this point in time.
HBO original programming president Casey Bloys previously alluded to a third season being made but adds that work was not being rushed in any way so that quality will not be sacrificed. "I don't have anything on paper yet but I know there are some ideas going back and forth," he said (via Variety). "I don't want to rush it. I don't want to do anything just to get it on the air."

And although it is widely known that Pizzolatto will not be serving as showrunner anymore, that does not mean that Milch will be replacing him in that role. Pizzolatto stepped down from his position in order to work on other projects, including a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr. It was revealed, though, that he will still be involved in the development of a potential third season. So far, a new showrunner has yet to be named.
The first season of "True Detective" was met with positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, but its sophomore cycle did not fare quite as well. Matthew McConaughey, who played Rust Cohle in season 1, previously stated that he is open to returning as the character in a future season.
Right now, nothing is certain and the future of "True Detective" remains in the dark.
